Patients are becoming more and more aware and informed about their state of health, and more involved in their treatment. The ongoing shift in power between the medical profession and patients is driven by changes in behaviour, as well as digitalization and legislation. Patients are taking greater responsibility for their own treatment and require increased availability and more rapid recovery. In Sweden, the new Patient Act, which came into force on January 1, 2015, is driving the development towards new working methods. The aim of the Act is to strengthen and define the patient’s position and to promote the patient’s integrity, self-determination and involvement.
